This Week At School

I feel like the week flew by (although, I must admit there was one day where it was about 4th period (there are 5 in the morning) and I thought to myself "surely it must be the afternoon already... I've had lunch... no?"... I'm sure we've all had those days.

-  In math most of my students came back with their math posters.  We also made some math pendants (something I originally thought we would do the first day of school but then decided I would do a bunch of pre teaching first)

With all the math stuff being handed in we are running out of space to display it all!

I had all but one of my students try the regular posters for this first month (I sent them home for homework - they had a week to get them back and parents/older siblings were allowed to help).  For the one students that didn't get the regular poster I pretty much gave her a poster with the same ideas... I just made it a little less wordy, added in examples (or pictures), and underlined important information in the word problems.

-  In art we are doing some Picasso inspired self portraits I got the idea from Artolazzi  and in a couple of weeks once we are finished ours I'll write up a post with my instructions to it (and another picture... this time of our finished pieces)

But here they are drying by the windowsill at the end of the day

-  In ELA we are working on our writing (hopefully this week - maybe next) we will start our spelling program).  My idea for writing is that one week I will give them a few ideas to start writing about and the next week they will take whatever one they really enjoyed and go through the editing process and finish it.  So, right now they all have 3 pieces of work in their rough draft sections of their writing folders.

One of my students put her speech up in the MOLA - it is her rough copy but I'm letting it slide just so we can have something in there.  In other news regarding the MOLA - the frames are starting to fall down (well one has and another is now crooked).

- In Science we finished learning a little bit about each simple machine on EdHeads and I sent them all home with homework to find simple machines in their house.  This week we will start looking at levers (by the end of this mini unit on levers they will all be making catapults)

- In SS we are still familiarizing ourselves with the textbook.  One more day of this and we can actually start learning about some First People's!

-  I've also had a number of meetings (and I think I've got at least 3 this coming week), have been having cross country practices (our first meet is Friday), and we did our Terry Fox run on Friday 

To support cancer research the staff at my school all purchased a Terry Fox t-shirt that we wore on Friday.  For my American friends who don't know who Terry Fox is stand by and watch for a post on Thursday about him.

It's been a busy week!

Dress to Impress

Why I think this one made it into the top 5?

I don't want to say it is because of the words that I used and surely people don't just google "dress to impress" but maybe they do.  What I want to believe is that others out there want to know how to dress as a substitute teacher (or teacher) and so you've come back time and time again to double check... I imagine the conversation you have with yourself goes a little something like this:

"Alright, cool watch and shoes [check], something sparkly to distract the kinders [check], awesome tie that everyone will be talking about [check].. I'm ready to go!"

Please remember to put on pants and a shirt... those are important too!

What I Wore

The staff at my school were getting appreciated this week so on Tuesday we were all instructed to dress "Hawaiian"  

"but I've never been to Hawaii" I complained 

I opted for brighter colours and taking out my sandals for the first time this year (it has been frigid up here!)

I searched and searched for a fake flower to wear in my hair (I used to have one attached to a bobby pin for such emergencies as "Hawaiian Day" but alas, I did not find it)

On this day I also put my hair in braids the night before so my hair was wavy when I took them out in the morning.

"Miss Penner I LOVE you hair.  It goes well with your shirt" 

one student told me

.... good to know that hair can "go with" a shirt (I feel like I've been doing it all wrong up to this point then).

What I Wore

This weeks weather has been all over the map.  It's been nice, it's been rainy (we even had indoor recess a couple of times), and yes, it has even been snowy.  Luckily it isn't May yet... otherwise we could all cry over the fact that it snowed yesterday!

Sidenote:  I won a bet with one of my students because it snowed.  Apparently we bet $2 and I have zero recollection of any of this but I do remember telling this class that Friday was not going to be nice and so we would have their outdoor celebration the following week sometime.  No, I won't collect that $2 from him.

I also had an interview this week so I had to show up to school fancy (even though I was only at school for a half day because I had PD in the morning).

What I Wore

Spring weather officially started to arrive this week!

So I'll (hopefully) be tucking my warmer clothes further back in my closet and letting my spring/summer wardrobe take center stage!

But... I haven't quite started that yet

Confession:  I'm kind of over this dress but I don't know if I want to part with it yet (and so I continue to wear it.. occasionally).

I heard from some friends that Ardene was the place to go if you are looking for a wide flat shoes collection (and not spend much on them).  So I was at the mall today and wowzers do they have a lot to choose from! I'm excited to start replacing all my well worn (loved) flats!

What I Wore

On Friday's I generally dress a little more casual.  I TRY not to wear jeans any of the other days of the week (I don't count my coloured jeans though).

Last week I said I would look for new black boots... I should probably start looking for new flats too.  Most of mine have seen better days.

What I Wore

We [hopefully] got our last blast of winter this week leaving us (once again) in a deep freeze.  Thankfully, I got my duty day out of the way just before the deep freeze hit and was even wearing my rain boots!

Anywho, I took the chilly temperatures to continue wearing some of my warmer clothes (boy am I looking forward to actual spring like temperatures!).  

Next week is spring break which over here means painting and shopping.  Hopefully I'll find some new black boots while I'm out (there have seen better days).

What I Wore

I realized today that I hadn't done one of these in a couple weeks.  That's probably because I am running out of clothes to wear!

By Friday I wasn't feeling all that great and was so done with stupid winter (we had a snow day the day before which meant that a bunch of snow came with that snow day)

To embrace my hatred for winter and to help urge on spring I wore some spring colours!

I apparently also thought that with all the new snow it would be a great day to wear runners!

My secret test was to see if I got any compliments on them... I often get compliments when I wear my Puma's... apparently it is just the Puma's that my students love because no one bothered to notice these runners.

Ah well... dully noted.

What I Wore

Once again I find myself apologizing for the lack of posts.  

My excuse?

I had friends from out of town (province) in and I wanted to spend tons and tons of time with them.

Anyways, this post was easy enough so this should hold you over until my TWAS tomorrow and hopefully a lesson (or 2) next week.

I had duty yesterday.

When I have duty I wear pants.

I also wore boots outside.

Pleas notice that I got brave and tried colour on top AND bottom!

(originally I had thought my purple pants would be okay because yellow and purple are complimentary colours but it didn't look right... plus bonus: it looks like I'm supporting our football team with this colour combo!)

All dressed up for a wedding

I had all these items for forever because I was supposed to go to a wedding in November.  Then breakups happened and call me crazy but I didn't go to a wedding for his friends after that (plus I don't think I was invited any longer).  So I finally got around to taking the tags of the dress and putting it to use.

The bag I scrambled for at the mall the weekend before... I didn't know what I was looking for other then I needed something smaller than my brown bag. 

 Then I found this for $5.

  Score.

What I Wore

Don't worry... I wore a 2nd boot this day!

I love, love, LOVE this dress.

And no; love is not to strong of a word to use when it comes to this super cute in summer, fall, AND winter dress (I haven't owned it through a spring yet).

I had to do some quick mending of the dress this morning (there is a tie in the back that somehow broke off one side... it isn't super important but I figured I would fix it then instead of leaving it and forgetting about it).

The cardigan is orange.. I debated between orange, pink, and blue before deciding that even though orange looked a little fallish that it was the best option.

Confession: the cardigan was only $5 at Target!

The boots?

You may recall this post where I stated I didn't care for any of my boots.  Well that was actually a lie because I have a pair of black ones I don't mind.  These ones are new though.  I've wanted brown boots for at least a year and I finally got some!  I'm a happy girl.

What I Wore

I bought coloured jeans a while ago the only problem?  I'm too scared to wear colour on top when I have it on the bottom.

BUT I do know my colour wheel and maybe, just maybe, I'll brave some complimentary colour action and throw on a yellow top someday soon with my purple pants.

The flats?

You should know that I do wear boots to school.  Every day.  It is too cold and snowy to go without them.

BUT I'm not really a fan of many of my boots whereas I'm a huge fan of most of my flats. So I swap out my boots for flats as soon as I get to the staffroom.

Confession:  I have even been known to go back and forth from my hut in my flats (yup, that's right I go outside in my flats... in winter.. I'm Canadian!)

The answer:  Not particularly.

But they came on tour with me across Canada last school year and if they were good enough for all of Canada they were good enough for our outdoorsy field trip!

What I Wore

Today is my first ever snow day (that I can remember at least)!

Yesterday I also got my internet hooked up so I'm back online and ready to move on with my life in my new place!

So to start off this first ever blog post from my new place... What did I wear to school yesterday?

With just over 2 weeks until Christmas things are starting to wind down at school.  Kids are getting antsy and the teachers are having to entertain them more than usual.

So yesterday we played floor hockey against the grade 8 boys at lunch!

I debated on whether I would want to change at school or to just play floor hockey with what I was already wearing and since I was already bringing a large container of cookies for snack I opted for a more casual look

The kids commented on how different I looked and even told me that I looked more casual!

Plus my snoozing sushi shirt was a huge hit.

The teachers lost both games (but hey, we were low on players)

Happy Halloween!

We aren't "celebrating" Halloween at school.  I'm going to assume that most people don't "celebrate" it... we just all partake in Halloween activities.

So we are instead having Fall Fest at school.

Complete with a "spirit" week and pumpkin carving competition.

Today was obviously costume day.  Nothing scary could be worn, nothing with weapons and no masks.  So, what did I go as?

After some hunting around for a non scandelous adult version of this I came across this lovely blog

Tales of a Trophy Wife

and got to working making my version of a peacock costume.  

I took ideas from both costumes and here are some tips when making it:

Unless you know you are getting a great deal at the fabric store do not buy your felt there.  I think I could have saved a bundle on the felt if I had boughten those small sheets of it at Michaels.

I believe I ended up buying 2 meters of black tulle and 1 meter of each blue and purple.  I wish I would have boughten 3 meters of black though.

I tied the black tulle onto a ribbon... the black tulle sticks out further than the coloured ones.  Then I tied everything else onto a second ribbon which I attached onto the first black ribbon (this seems very confusing but it's not).  Then all I do is tie the ribbon around my waist.  Easy peasy.

I'm planning on wearing it with black boots.

I considered putting a little glue on the back of each felt feather so that it wouldn't flip the wrong way... but never got around to it (and I was a little worried it would somehow ruin everything).

Another tip:  I bought a bunch of peacock feathers at Michaels with one of their 40% off coupons (they have them all the time).  The bunch came together and were glued onto this giant stick.  I just pulled every feather off of it (I had to cut them all pretty short to stick in my hair anyways).  I THINK this was cheaper then purchasing the feathers individually.  I must have priced it out in store.  

I already had peacock feather earrings so those were free!

What I Wore

I was going to post another outfit that involved me wearing jeans to school but then decided against it...

 I don't ALWAYS wear jeans.

Those are black tights... not sweats and not pants (even though they look a little big).

I paired it with some black boots (sometimes I wear tights that only go to just below the knee and will pair it with sandals though)

I'm excited to show off what I'll be wearing next week.  

It's "spirit week" AND halloween

which means pajamas and my awesome halloween costume (which I did manage to finish)

And no, my black pants still aren't hemmed.

What I Wore...

Somehow I've gone ahead and gotten the label as some kind of teacher who always looks fashionable.  I must admit that yes, somedays I do try to look good but there are definitely days that I don't want to try and just throw on a dress because it is easy.  No matter what I do one of my grade 8 students insists that I always look great (and boosts my ego every day)

So... what have I been wearing the last week or so at school?

This past week we had picture day and here is the number I wore that day.  I wasn't sure what to wear so I went with white jeans *gasp* (isn't it a rule not to wear white after labour day AND jeans... at school!?!).  I just didn't see the point of getting super dressy just for a photo.  Also, my black pants are too big on me (and have been for some time now).  Which is why I bought new black pants months ago and for some reason STILL haven't gotten around to hemming them.  I will.  This week!

Yes, I wear jeans at school.  Our school is fairly casual.  But I do try to only wear blue jeans on Friday's (and always have paired it with a nicer shirt).

My favourite accessory as a teacher (or substitute) a big bag!  You can't tell by this picture but this bag is massive!  I've easily fit my lunch, a water bottle, a binder, and 20 duotangs in here at the same time.  

It is a must.
